Es con gran gusto que les escribimos desde Casa Colibrí.Tenemos mucho que compartirles en este año nuevo y también muchas cosas por las cuales estaragradecidos. El 2011 fue un buen año con excelentes voluntarios. Comenzamos el2012 mirando hacia adelante y buscandoexpandir el trabajo en nuestra huerta y con la gente en Hostotipaquillo.También estamos muy emocionados con la idea de poder construir un par decuartos más en la casa. Este es el quinto año de Casa Colibrí y queremosagradecer a todas y todos los que de diferentes maneras han hecho posible nuestrotrabajo.

Inicialmente queremos agradecer a las y los voluntarios queestuvieron con nosotros el año pasado. Nuestro primer voluntario fue JoshuaDelph que vino de el Colegio de Goshen en Indiana; él estuvo con nosotros portres meses. Enseguida tuvimos a Wanda y GerritjanHuinink, una pareja jóven de Amsterdam. Ellos estuvieron aquí por cuatrosemanas. Una de nuestras voluntarias más jóvenes, Catherine Goggins, de tansolo 17 años, estuvo con nosotros por tres semanas. A pesar de haver sido uncorto tiempo fue una buena experiencia para todas y todos. Después de Catherine, llegóAlicia Roush de Florida quien aún sigue con nosotros, sí!! En Octubre tuvimos aSarah Fuller de Canadá y a Rebecca Casas de California, ambas estuvieron aquípor tres meses. Recibímos el año nuevo con dos nuevos miembros para la comunidad,Chris Gorman de California y Gustavo Monzón de Guatemala. A todas ellas y ellos, a las y losque han sido pare de Casa Colibrí¡Muchas Gracias!

Nuestra huerta continúa floreciendo y este año queremoslograr aún más. Mientras continuamos aprendiendo y poniendo en práctica lasiembra orgánica, también esperamos seguir compartiendo lo aprendido con otroscampesinos de nuestro pueblo. Uno de nuestros proyectos continuos es laalaboración de composta y nuestro espacio de lombricultura. La huerta ha pasadopor muchos cambios, por el momento estamos levantando las camas de siembra unpoco más y agregando abono/composta y a la vez introduciendo un sistema deriego. Estamos muy emocionados porque por primera vez vamos a plantar variassemillas orgánicas y ciertas verduras y vegetales que no habíamos plantado antes como la papa,ciertas variedades de chiles y plantas medicinales.

A su vez estamoscontentos de conectarnos con más personas en el pueblo. En ocasiones colaboramoscon otros campesinos, compartiendo el trabajo y el conocimiento, aquí en lahuerta y en sus parcelas. El año pasado participamos en un taller de siembraorgánica donde aprendimos técnicas para elaborar composta. Este año esperamospoder organizar más talleres y enfocarnos en la medicina natural y el contrólorgánico de las plagas. A parte de estas actividades nos mantenemos activos con las clases deinglés, baile folklórico, tutorias ytalleres de arte. Este mes se comenzó con un grupito de yoga. De la misma maneraestamos agradecidos de poder continuar compartiendo los alimentos con algunosniños del barrio tres veces a la semana. En nuestra misa mensual disfrutamos deuna buena covivencia y de muy buena comida, de nuestros amigos en Hostotipaquilloy Guadalajara.

Una de nuestras metas este año es el poder expander elespacio agregando dos cuartos más, así poder brindar lugar para mas visitantesy voluntarios. Hemos empezado con los preparativos y las cotizaciones para esteproyecto. Esperamos poder empezar en unas semanas más!

It is with great pleasure that we write to youfrom Casa Colibrí. We have so much toshare with you in this New Year and also many things for which we are grateful. 2011 was a great year with many wonderfulvolunteers. As 2012 begins we lookforward to continuing to expanding our work in our garden and within thecommunity of Hostotipaquillo. Also, weare very excited to be building additional rooms in our house. This is our fifth year for Casa Colibrí and wewant to thank everyone who has been involved and continues to make the work wedo possible.

Initially, we want to thank all the volunteersthat were part of our community last year. Our first volunteer, Joshua Delphcame from Goshen College in Indiana; he was with us for three months. Following,we had Wanda and Gerritjan Huinink, ayoung couple from Amsterdam. They werehere for four weeks. One of our youngestvolunteers, Catherine Goggins (seventeen years old), came to us fromVirginia. She was here for three weeks, andeven though it was short period of time it was definitely a good experience foreveryone. After Catherine, Alicia Roushfrom Florida joined us. Alicia is stillwith us, yea!! Towards the end of theyear in October we had Sarah Fuller from Canada and Rebecca Casas fromCalifornia. They both stayed three months. Lastly, we welcomed the New Year with two new community members, ChrisGorman from California and Gustavo Monzon from Guatemala. To all of them and to all of you that havebeen a part of Casa Colibrí we want to say thank you.

Our garden continues to flourish and this yearwe aim to accomplish even more. As we continuethe process of ensuring an organic and sustainable garden, we also hope to passon our techniques to other campesinos in the community. Our latest projects include our never endingcompost and our new favorite, worms! Ourgarden, like life, is going through some changes. We are making the beds bigger in height andreworking the irrigation system. We willalso be planting our very first bought organic seeds and planting things notyet grown at our house, like potatoes, a variety of chiles, and much more.

We are also very grateful for our expanding externalcommunity. We often collaborate withother farmers, sharing work and knowledge both in our garden and theirfields. Last year we were able to attenda local organic farming workshop where we learned about different compostingmethods. This year we hope to host thenext community workshop and focus on organic pest control and herbology. In addition to our gardening we keep a busyschedule with tutoring, English and dance classes, art workshops, and thismonth have started a yoga group too. Weare thankful to also continue to share lunch three times a week with ourneighbors. At our monthly misa we gather to enjoy thefruits of our friendships and labor over prayer, lively conversations, song,and delicious dishes from many kitchens and gardens from Hostotipaquillo toGuadalajara.

We are very happy to continue construction atCasa Colibri. A long term goal ofexpanding our space to welcome more visitors and guests has already begun. As of this letter we are refinishing ourgarden room and have begun preparations for additional rooms on the secondfloor. In the next few weeks we willbegin building!

We thank all of ourfriends and family of Casa Colibrí. Whether it is through prayers, financialcontributions, encouragement, help in the garden, or donations of clothes,supplies, or fruits and vegetables, we depend on you. Thank you!

Hola, un saludo de Gustavo, el nuevo miembro Chapín de laComunidad desde el sur de la frontera, Hostotipaquillo, Jalisco; acá donde elcompartir y la esperanza se unen en muchos caminos y en muchas acciones en CasaColibrí.

Hoy solo quiero compartir algo que me sucedió en los últimosmeses de mi vida en USA, y es más bien platicar sobre un grupo de genteslatinas, salvadoreñas, guatemaltecas y mexicanas, que tienen un denominadorcomún, y es ser líderes en la solidaridad, todos ellos fueron actoresfundamentales de los tres grandes eventos de recaudación de fondos para estaCasa de Hospitalidad, primero el agradecimiento por los 10 años de trabajojuntos, luego por mi cumpleaños y tercero por mi despedida.

Voy a platicarles brevemente por cada uno de ellos.

El grupo mas grande es el de la hermana ComunidadSalvadoreña, con ellos hemos vivido un proceso, y que hoy se ha hecho trueque,pues nos han apoyado, sin escatimar esfuerzos y sacrificios, luego de largashoras de duro trabajo, se unieron al proyecto de apoyo a esta Casa deHospitalidad Colibrí, y es porque ellos están atentos a la realidad del sur,ellos han formado Comités u Organizaciones que aportan miles de dólares aldesarrollo de sus comunidades cada año, ellos mas que nadie conoce que es lacooperación y lo importante que es la organización, y en los eventos nofaltaron las pupusas, el pollo guisado salvadoreño, el curtido, la cervecita,etc.

Otro grupo muy importante y cercano es el de la Comunidad deMujeres Mexicanas en el Sur Centro de LA, del Proyecto Habitacional El Pueblo,un área muy pobre, bastante y marginado, pero no por eso menos solidario ytrabajan como hormigas, bien organizadas y cada una aportando una cosita, hastatraer desde tamales hasta arroz.

Y el ultimo grupo, el mas antiguo y que no podían faltar,fue de mis paisanos, ellos de la Comunidad Indígena Maya Ki’ché guatemalteca yalgunos Chapines, su presencia, su fidelidad, su sencillez y su cercanía,siempre han sido un detalle constante, de una forma silenciosa, perodeterminante han dicho siempre si, con los chuchitos, los tamales de chipilín,los frijoles, etc.

Por ellos y ellas yo estoy acá, ellos hicieron posible queyo pudiese estar hoy en esta casa, aportando desde mi manera peculiar decocinar, inventando cada día, tanto para comer saludable y balanceado, así comoa economizar, soy el encargado de las compras, del proyecto de salud naturalorgánica y tradicional, así como apoyando en el abono de la permacultura, en elcuidado de las hortalizas y también en otros detallitos que van saliendo poco apoco, y que hacen de mi experiencia en esta Casa de Hospitalidad Colibrí sea unmomento de: desaprender todo aquello que vaya en la indiferencia, el egoísmo,el miedo; aprender las verdades de la hospitalidad, la inclusión, el humanismoy el medio ambiente; y por ultimo, reaprender la ruta de mis antepasados en latradición, el respeto y el consenso del sentido común de la vida en Koinonia, ytodo por un mundo mejor que es posible.

Hola,greetings from Gustavo, the ¨Chapín¨ and the newest member of the Community southof the border in Hostotipaquillo, Jalisco, where sharing and hope get togetherin many ways and actions here at Casa Colibrí.

Today Ijust want to share some things that happened to me in the last months of mylife in the USA, and especially to talk about a group of Latino immigrants fromEl Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico who have a common goal, to be leaders insolidarity. They were all key players in the three major fundraising events forthe Hospitality House, Casa Colibrí. First,thanks for the ten years of working together, second for my birthday party, andthe third for my farewell. I'm going totalk briefly on each community of Immigrants.

The largestgroup is the Salvadoran Community, with them we have grown through a process ofsharing and bartering. They havesupported us, sparing no efforts and sacrifices; and with long hours of hardwork have joined the project to support this Casa Colibrí of Hospitality. Because they are attentive to the reality southof the border, they have formed committees and organizations that providethousands of dollars to the development of their communities each year. They, more than anyone, know cooperation andthe importance of organizing; in all of their events there is an overflowing of¨pupusas¨, the Salvadoran chicken stew, the curtido, beer, etc.

Anothervery important and close group is the Mexican Women Community in South CentralLA, El Pueblo Housing Project. They arefrom a very poor and marginalized area but not less supportive. They work likeants, well organized, with each contributing a little something, such as tamalesor rice.
The lastgroup, the oldest that could not be missed, is of my countrymen, including theindigenous community and some Guatemalan Maya Ki'ché Chapines. Their presence, their fidelity, simplicity andproximity, have always been nice and constant; and in a very quiet way, theyhave always said yes, supporting us with chuchitos,chipilín tamales, beans, etc.

Because of them I'm here. They made itpossible for me to be in this house today, bringing my own gifts, my special wayof cooking, and my inventiveness daily: to eat healthy, balanced, and economized. I am in charge of the weekly shopping,the natural health organic project and traditional medicine. I also assist in the worm/compost project andthe use of permaculture techniques in the care of vegetables as well as otherdetails that come up little by little. All of this makes my experience here at Casa Colibrí a time ofunlearning and relearing, a time to let go of all the things that have to dowith indifference, selfishness, and fear. It is a time to learn new truths of hospitality, inclusion, humanisimand ecology, and finally to relearn my ancestor’s ways, the tradition, therespect, and the wisdom of common sense of life in Koinonia, all of these for a better world.

Visiting Beto´s ranch / Visitando el rancho de Beto

One recent Sunday in October, Manuel´s friend Beto drove Manuel, Rebecca and I (Sarah) to his ranch for an afternoon of fun and elote-eating. Beto had planted lots of corn on his land, and much of it had survived the dry spell that the area had been experiencing. He was also growing jamaica and squash—and I´m sure some other things besides—and there was also a full complement of cows, horses, chickens and tilapia.

Un Domingo reciente en octubre, Beto, amigo de Manuel, nos invito (Rebecca, Sarah y Manuel) a su rancho para pasar la tarde y comer elotes. Beto plantó mucho maíz y la mayoría de la milpa sobrevivió la sequía que sufrió esta región. También sembró jamaica, calabaza, y estoy segura que muchas otras cosas. Tiene también en su rancho vacas caballos gallinas y pescado tilapia.

The stated goal of the afternoon was to create and eat delicious sweet corn tamales. Beto brought up some sacks of ears of corn for us, and we were instructed to carefully remove and set aside outer husks that would be big enough to form the wrappings in which the tamales would be cooked. Then, Rebecca intrepidly cut the corn kernels off of the cobs, and Manuel debonairly ground the kernels into a delicious corn paste with a metal hand-grinder that had been affixed to a nearby tree stump. The corn was white, but some cobs were also blue or purple, and they made for a very pretty paste.

El objetivo de pasar la tarde en su rancho era el aprender a hacer deliciosos tamales dulces de elote. Beto trajo costales de hojas de elote frescas y nos enseño a separar las hojas más grandes que son las que usariamos para preparar los tamales. Rebecca hizo un magnífico trabajo desgranando los elotes tiernos mientras Manuel los molía en un molinito de mano que Beto instaló en un tronco de un árbol seco para crear la masa con la cual se prepararían los tamales. La mayoría de los elotes eran blancos, aunque algunos salían rojos y negros.

Beto´s wife Martina took the corn paste and added some sugar and some margarine, as well as a few other things including something called ¨royal¨ (I have yet to discern what this is, but it´s in like every baking recipe). She showed us how to fold little spoonfuls of this batter into the corn husks and put them into a big pot which was then put to steam over a wood fire nearby.

Martina, la esposa de Beto preparó la masa que salió de los elotes con un poco de azúcar, margarina y royal. Ella nos enseño a embarrar la masa en las hojas frescas de elote y después ponerlos en una olla para luego ponerlos al fuego.

While the tamales were cooking, Beto took Rebecca and I down to where the cows were, to give us our second lesson in cow-milking. Our first attempts had been pretty inauspicious, but I guess he had faith in us. When Rebecca couldn´t get any milk to come out, he called over some of his little kids to show her how it was done. ¨Look, even a kid can do it!¨ he said to Rebecca as his son´s little tiny fist successfully squeezed hot milk into the bucket. Rebecca later had much more luck with the Jersey. And, he showed her how to ride a horse for the first time. I got to ride the horse, too, but unfortunately I rather foolishly dismounted without looking first, and landed in an impressively large pile of manure.

Mientras los tamales se cocían, Beto nos llevo a Rebecca y a mi a donde estan las vacas para darnos nuestra segunda lección en ordeñar. Nuestro primer intento fue poco productivo pero Beto aún tiene fe en nosotras. Cuando Rebecca no podía sacar nada de leche de la vaca Beto llamó a uno de sus hijos pequeños para mostrar a Rebecca como se hacía: ¨Mira, hasta un niño lo puede hacer ¨ decía Beto mientras la pequeña mano de uno de sus hijos lograba sacar leche de la vaca. Posteriormente Rebecca pudo ordeñar la vaca ¨Jersey¨. Beto enseñó a Rebecca a montar a caballo por primera vez. Cuando fué mi turno no puse mucha atención al vajarme del caballo y caí en una enorme montón de histiércol.

So, we had a lot of fun. I didn´t even tell you yet about the delicious dinner that they made for us over firepits by their hilltop house overlooking the farm. They made a big tall stack of perfect tortillias, as well as guacamole, some beautiful chili sauce, lemonade from giant fruits that grew on trees at the farm, roast squash covered in a sweet layer of carmelized sugar, beans, and roast peppers filled with cheese—to say nothing of the sweet corn tamales for dessert. We ate the tamales as we sat beside the house and watched the setting sun deepen the colours of the hills and sky around us, and as we looked around at the fields from which all of that delicious food came.

Nos divertimos mucho y ni siqueira les he contado de la deliciosa comida que nos prepararon en el fogón que tienen en su pequeña casita arriba en la colina, con una vista impresionante de su rancho. Hicieron un altero de tortillas hechas a mano, con guacamole, salsa picante, limonada de sus limoneros, calabaza endulzada cocida, frijoles, chiles rellenos de queso y claro, los deliciosos tamales dulces de elote. Comimos los tamales mientras disfrutavamos del atardacer que nos deleitava con sus colores en las montañans y el cielo. Miramos alreadedor de su rancho del cual proviene esta deliciosa comida.

Now, I want to take a minute here to say that I don´t want to romanticize farm work. It´s difficult, dirty, requires a lot of skill and planning and is basically unceasing. Also, it requires a kind of patience that I find nearly supernatural—anything can happen, and if the weather or the zilllion other creatures that like to eat farm crops don´t cooperate, it can be pretty heartbreaking. Lots of people like to talk about how they like the idea of farming, but not nearly as many people enjoy actual farming. Only time will tell which type of person I will turn out to be, so I am definitely not going to make any claims one way or the other right here. But I´d like to take a moment to salute all farmers, gardeners, farmer´s market shoppers, painstaking small-scale food processors, backyard zucchini growers, and everyone else who either voluntarily undertakes to remember or is compelled by the realities of their life to know and respect that food comes from the earth and is rightfully the province of people and communities.

Ahora quiero tomar un momento para decir que no quiero romantizar el trabajo del campo. Es muy difícil, sucio, pesado, requiere de mucho habilidad, planeación y núnca se acaba. Por su puesto que requiere de mucha paciencia, la cual encuentro un poco supernatural – cualquier cosa puede pasar – tomando en cuanta el clima y los cientos de animalitos que les gusta comer los sembradíos, esto puede ser un poco desesperante. Mucha gente habla de lo bonito que es sembrar, pero muy poca gente de verdad lo hace de corazón. Sólo el tiempo dirá que clase de persona seré yo, asi que no haré muchos comentarios al respecto. También quiero tomar un momento para saludar a todos los campesinos, jardineros, los que compran las frutas y verduras, las pequeñas empresas familiares que se dedican a procesar alimentos, gente que siembra hortalizas en sus corrales, y a todos aquellos que voluntariamente toman en serio la realidad de que la comida proviene de nuestra madre tierra y que alimenta a gente de diferentes comunidades.

And this, of course, brings me to the part of this reflection where I talk about Peter Maurin, Casa Colibri, Catholic Worker farms and the Catholic worker... Catholic Worker co-founder Peter Maurin was also aware of this earth-working reality of humans, and saw farming as an irrefutable plank in the plan to build a new society in the shell of the old. Peter Maurin´s insistence on ¨agronomic universities¨ as 33.33% of the Catholic Worker vision demonstrates his understanding that thinking and learning about food production—as well as doing it—are linked to social justice and to the vision of making a world where it´s easier to be good.

Y todo esto me trae a reflexionar sobre Peter Marin, Casa Colibrí, Las granjas de los trabajadores católicos y el movimiento del Trabajador Católico en General... El co-fundador del Trabajador Católico, Peter Maurin fué muy conciente de la realidad de todos los trabajadores y vió en el trabajo del campo uno de los pilares para construir una sociedad nueva en el caparazón de la sociead antigua. La insistencia de Peter en las ¨universidades agronómicas¨ como una parte esencial de la visión del Trabajador Católico demuestra su ideología acerca de la producción de comida y el aprendizaje sobre las labores de la tierra como un factor vinculado a la justicia social y la visión de trabajar para crear un mundo donde sea más fácil el hacer el bien.

Here at Casa Colibri, we have a garden and we´re growing beans, radishes, chard, zucchini, tomatos, garlic, coriander, carrots, spinach and lettuce. I impress myself with this list, but what I should say is that we´re growing modest rows of each of these things, and that under the tutelage of Manuel I feel like I´m just learning the basics of these things (in spite of all of my years spent working on farms as a horticultural labourer, I´ve never had to learn about growing food or planning a garden for myself). And that´s how I felt at Beto´s ranch, too, as I enjoyed his hospitality—like a little kid who has so much to learn about even the most basic aspects of food production and self-sufficiency. My grandparents grew up on family farms, but I´ve lost touch with this whole aspect of human reality.

Aquí en Casa Colibrí, tenemos una pequeña huerta orgánica donde sembramos frijól, rábanos, acélga, calabacita, tomates, ajo, zanahoria, espinaca, lechuga, etc. Yo misma me impresiono con esta lista de vegetales, pero acepto que sembramos espacios muy pequeños en surcos de estos alimentos. Con la ayuda de Manuel, siento que estoy aprendiendo lo básico (aunque he pasado varios años trabajando en vivieros de flores, pero núnca aprendí a sembrar hortalizas) También en el rancho de Beto siento que he aprendido mucho y he disfrutado de su hospitalidad – como un niño que tiene mucho que aprender de las cosas mas básicas de sembrar y el ser autosuficiente – Mis abuelos crecieron en ranchos, pero yo he perdido esta tradición que es un aspecto de la realidad humana.

Beto told us, ¨I used to live in the city, for years, but I always felt like I was living in jail. Here,¨ his gesture takes in the ranch, the plants and animals that need constant attention, as well as his kids playing and working nearby, ¨this is freedom.¨ It´s also apparent that it´s a lot of hard work, and maybe even a calling—and maybe even a calling that not all members of a family or a community may share. On this visit to the ranch, as we sit on the hilltop and watch the sky darken behind the hills, and as I think too about the Casa Colibri garden, I´m trying to figure out what Peter Maurin was talking about.

Beto nos compartió: ¨Yo solía vivir en la ciudad, por muchos años, pero siempre sentí que vivía en una cárcel¨... ¨Aquí...¨ señala su rancho, las plantas, los animales que necesitan constante atención, sus hijos que juegan cerca ... ¨Esto es libertad¨. Es aparente que este tipo de vida requiere mucho trabajo e incluso es una voación, un llamado con el cual no todos estan de acuerdo. En esta visita al su rancho, mientras estabamos sentados en la colina y miramos caer el sol en las montañas, pienso también en la pequeña huerta de Casa Colibrí... trato de descubrir de lo que Peter Maurin hablaba.

Spending a few weeks at Casa Colibrí / Pasando unas Semanas en Casa Colibrí

I have recently returned home from Casa Colibri and looking back I hope to share my experience and give a glimpse of the mission and community. I arrived for a three week stay – excited to learn more about organic farming and Spanish. I felt immediately welcomed as I met the group outside of customs in the Guadalajara airport and on our drive to Hosto enjoyed the view and the stories of the past weeks. As we neared Hosto I was ready to settle in and get to work! My first full day was a Sunday and very relaxing. I headed off to Mass in the late afternoon and only got a little lost but fortunately still arrived in time for the Rosary beforehand. At the time the Hail Mary was the only prayer I knew in Spanish which worked quite well! The church is very prominent in the skyline (and daily life) of Hosto and served perfectly as a reference point for future walks and errands.

Hace poco regrese a casa despues de pasar un tiempo en Casa Colibrí. Quiero compartir mi experiencia y escribir un poco sobre la misión de esta comunidad. Pasé tres semanas ahi, muy emocionada por aprender más sobre la siembra orgánica y mejorar mi español. Tan pronto como llegue al aeropueto me sentí como en casa. Durante el trayecto a Hostotipauillo disfrute del paisaje y de la conversasión de lo que ha estado pasando en Casa Colibrí. Cuando llegamos a ¨Hosto¨ ya estaba lista para ajustarme a mi nueva casa y comenzar a trabajar. Mi primer dia fué un Domingo, muy relajante por cierto. Por la tarde fuí a misa y aunque no estaba segura de donde estaba la Iglesia alcancé a llegar a tiempo para el Rosario, que se reza antes de la misa. En ese momento El Ave Maria era la unica oración que me sabia de memoria en español, lo cual fue suficiente. La iglesia destaca mucho en el paisaje del pueblo y también un símbolo muy importante en la vida del pueblo. Por su torre tan alta, sirve de referencia para futuros mandados o para salir a caminar.

Some kids stopped by for fruit or to help in the garden prior to Monday but it was great to meet all of our lunch friends Monday afternoon. This was a very pleasant surprise to me as I had not known the kids would be such an important part of Casa Colibri and the larger Catholic Worker’s service. Lunch tended to be a little hectic most days but the kids ensured it was fulfilling every day. Whether a special intention following the blessing, skipping on the way to the soccer field, or sheer joy in response to jello, they were thankful for “small things” and reminded me to notice and appreciate them as well. My English class met during the evenings on the same days lunch was served and I was fortunate to have Juan and Wanda, two other volunteers, to show me the ropes. My class was more interested in “juegos” or games than translating sentences and loved to compete! We worked on introductions and talking about things we like and like to do and I learned the border is irrelevant when it comes to Justin Bieber’s fanbase – “I like Justin Bieber” was a favorite line to practice!

Algunos niños vinieron pidiendo fruta o a ayudar en el huerta. Fue muy padre el conocerlos un día anterior ya que el lunes vienen a jugar, dibujar, hacer la tarea y compartir los alimentos con nosotros. Esta fue una sorpresa muy agradable para mi ya que no me había dado cuenta que tan importante son los niños para Casa Colibrí. La hora de la comida en ocasiones es muy ajetreada pero con los niños siempre es muy gratificante. En ocasiones rezamos entes de comer, otras ocasiones vamos al parque a juagar y se emocionan mucho cuando tenemos postre, siempre con una actitud de gratitud. Todo esto también me hace apreciar las pequeñas cosas de cada dia. Las clases de Inglés son durante la tarde y me da mucho gusto el que Wanda y Juan (otros voluntarios) me hallan ayudado a acoplarme con lo de las clases. La clase siempre es más interesante cuando hacemos juegos y a los niños les encanta los juegos de cmpetencia. En una de las clases hablamos sobre las cosas que nos gustan y las que no, en esa clase aprendí que la frontera no existe cuando se refiere a las fans de Justin Bieber. ¨Me gusta Justin Bieber¨ era una frase que apredieron muy rápido en Inglés.

Most days included a breakfast followed by a little work in the garden, a bit of planting or weeding after breakfast and watering in the evenings. The zucchinis, chickens, ants, and iguanas were thriving despite our best efforts to kill or deter the latter two. We really appreciated the rain when it arrived about a week into my stay, unfortunately the weeds did too! A few times a week we took time to pray and reflect, at first I was unsure of what this would be like but grew to enjoy and benefit from it quickly!

La mayoría de los día desayunamos primero y luego trabajamos un poco en la huerta: sembrando, deshierbando, y regando las plantas. Tenemos el problema de hormigas e iguanas, que comen mucho de lo que plantamos. Ha sido muy dificil el controlar esta plaga o exterminarlas. Después de largo tiempo de espera llegaron las lluvias y con ellas tambien muchas hierbas. Algunas veces durante la semana hacemos meditación y reflexion. Al principio no estaba muy segura com funcionaría todo esto pero después me gustó mucho y me ayudó.

The weekend of the monthly Mass was definitely a highlight! Everyone arrived under a threatening sky and we enjoyed the first half of the mass on the patio. Fr. Rodolfo was extremely welcoming (even throwing in some hand motions to ensure I understood the gospel!) With the 4th of July around the corner he spoke of the beauty of individuals from two countries working together in Mexico despite violence and lack of compassion and respect at the border and above it. The political disagreements at home had been easy to forget; partly because I wasn’t reading the newspaper over breakfast but also because many friends in Hosto were so welcoming. After Mass Josh (another intern) and I both received lots of hugs to celebrate the holiday. We had a wonderful dinner that night with lots of new friends, tacos, mole, a delicious cookie/cream dessert, and great music and chats. We got up for brunch and a visit to ruins of a hacienda nearby. Mango trees sprouted up between walls and in old fireplaces. I loved looking around although I knew I couldn’t capture it with a camera.

El primer sábado del mes tenemos misa aquí en Casa Colibrí y definitivamente fue una de mis actividades favoritas. Todos llegaron aun y con la posibilidad de una fuerte tormenta. El sacerdote Rodolfo ofreció una homilía muy bonita dandome una cordial bienvenida. Con gestos y mucho lenguaje corporal se aseguro de que yo entendiara el mensaje del evangelio. Rodolfo hablo durante su homilía sobre la importancia de trabajar juntos sin importar la lengua o la nacionalidad. Al finalizar la misa Josue (uno de los voluntarios) y yo recibimos muchos abrazos y nos sentimos como en casa. Tuvimos una fantástica cena con muchos amigos, tacos, mole, un postre delicioso de galleta y muscia para alternar la conversación. Al dia siquiente despues de desayunar fuimos en una caminata a una hacienda en ruinas que esta a las afueras del pueblo. Me encanto el lugar y aunque traía mi cámara era imposible el capturar la belleza con fotos.

Leaving was difficult but bearable with thoughts of a return in the future! Casa Colibri serves in so many ways that any talent can be put to work and the experience itself is incredibly rewarding!

El irme fue muy difícil pero no tanto cuando pienso en poder regresar. Casa Colibrí participa en el pueblo de muchas maneras de tal manera que cualquier talento puede ser aprobechado y la experiencia aqui adquirida es muy satisfactoria.

Temporada de Lluvias/The Rainy Season

Here in Hostotipaquillo, we have been doing a lot of work in the garden. We began planting in early June, since the rainy season usually arrives around that time, or even in late May. Since it was still so dry, we watered heavily, but our efforts were in vain. The rainy season arrived about a month late and almost none of our original planting even sprouted. We suspect that the intense heat killed the seeds before they ever had a chance. This year, parts of Mexico have experienced the worst drought in 70 years. This had put our gardening on hold, but since the nightly thunderstorms that denote the rainy season began a few weeks ago, we have furiously gone back to work.

Aquí en Hostotipaquillo, hemos estado trabajando mucho en nuestra huerta. Comenzamos sembrando a principios del mes de junio. Por lo general las lluvias llegan a principios de junio e incluso comienza a llover a fines de Mayo, pero este año las lluvias llegaron tarde asi que tuvimos que regar manualmente. El calor era muy intenso y sin la lluvia muy poco de lo que sembramos funciono. Muchos lugares de Mexico sufrieron las peores sequias de los últimos 70 años. Esto nos hizo el suspender un poco las actividades en el jardín. En cuanto comenzaron las primeras tormentas hace unas semanas hemos recomezado la actividad en la huerta.

Now our job has switched from watering desperately thirsty plants, to dealing with excessive runoff, flooding, and the sea of weeds that spring up in the wake of every storm. To combat this we are improving our runoff channels and raised beds, installing gravel pathways that weeds can´t grow in, plus lots of weeding and planting.

Ha llovido tanto que ahora tenemos un problema con el exceso de agua en la huerta. Hemos estado escarbando pequeños canales para que el agua se drene y también creando caminos con grava alrededor de las camas de siembra. De esta manera mantendrémos los caminos limpios de hierba y evitamos el exceso de agua en la tierra.

It´s a lot of work right now, but we´re excited to finally see the fruits of our labors. Our replanting has gone much better and we have zuchini, beans, tomatoes, corn, lettuce, and sunflowers that are fianlly poking out of the soil and starting to grow.

Es mucho trabajo, pero nos da mucho gusto el ver el fruto de nuestro esfuerzo. Todo le replantado ha estado saliendo perfectamente, tenemos plantado calabacita, frijol, tomate, elotes, lechuga, girasoles, entre otras cosas.

In addition, we´ve been working with a local organic farmer, Beto, to expand our arsenal of planet friendly gardening materials. He´s showed us how to make an organic pestacide for fungus, and a fertilizer with the freshest caca de vaca that can be found. As you can see from our before and after pictures, our compost, composed mainly of fallen leaves, weeds, and agave pulp, is finally coming to fruition and the garden has transformed (as it is every year) from a dusty dry corral, to a fertile jungle.

A parte de esto, hemos estado aprendiendo de un campesino de Hosto (Beto) quien también tiene mucho conocimiento en la siembra orgánica. El mes pasado nos invito a su rancho y nos enseño a preparar un pesticida natural que controla ciertos parasitos y hongos, también preparamos un fetilizante a base de mierda de vaca que ya casi esta listo para usarse. Como ya pueden ver, las fotografías de antes y después, nuestra ¨montaña¨ de composta ya esta casi lista. Mayormente preparada con hojas secas, hierbas y bagazo de agave. Nuestro jardín se ha transformado de un polvoriento corral a una fértil selva.

And when we aren´t in the garden, you can often find us at the nearby park, playing soccer with the local kids (and fledgling acrobats).

Cuando no estamos en el jardín, nos pueden encontrar en el parque más cercano, jugando futbol con unos niños del vecindario (también haciendo acrobacias)

Amigos de la comida | Lunch buddies

Dar de comer al pobre y hambriento es una parte importante de muchas
de las comunidades del Trabajador Católico. Un grupo de niños vienen
tres veces por semana aquí a Casa Colibrí después de la escuela para
comer y jugar. Comenzaron a venir, tocando la puerta y pidiendo
galletas o dulces. Creímos que era mejor el ofrecerles algo saludable.
La mayoría de ellos son hermanos o primos y provienen de familias de
escasos recursos donde también hay problemas de alcoholismo. Lo que sí
es seguro es que son niños que necesitan mucha atención. Aunque la
mayoría de ellos asisten a la escuela, siempre van un poco atrasados.
Por lo general andan desalineados y con problemas muy fuertes en su
comportamiento y disciplina. Tratamos en la medida de lo posible el
mantener un ambiente tranquilo aquí en Casa Colibrí y el evitar las
peleas y los gritos entre ellos, pero es difícil ya que es muy
probable que en su casa se recurra más a disciplinarlos con golpes que
hablándoles. En ocasiones es muy difícil el lidiar con ellos y hemos
llegado a sentirnos cansados y desilusionados después de tener que
correrlos por pelearse y gritarse. En ocasiones el ambiente es más
tranquilo y juegan y se divierten juntos, eso nos hace sentir mucho
mejor, incluso algunas veces son muy divertidos y les gusta decir
chistes y ayudarnos con la limpieza después de la comida.

Feeding the poor and hungry is an important part of the work of many
Catholic Worker houses. Here at Casa Colibrí, three times a week, a
bunch of hungry kids drop in after school for. They started coming for
lunch after they had been to the door several times asking for candies
or cookies. We figured it was better serve them healthy food if they
were so hungry. The children, many of them cousins or siblings of one
another, come from a difficult home situation, having parents
struggling with poverty and alcoholism. The bottom line is that they
are not much taken care of. They attend school irregularly and are
often a few years behind. They are often dirty and smelly as they
bathe themselves rarely. They all, to one degree or another, have
attention and behavioral problems. They need very strict rules and are
hard to reprimand, as they probably are more used to being beaten than
being talked to as a way of disciplining. It is hard work to receive
them. Sometimes we just feel disillusioned after having to kick them
out again because they ended up fighting and messing around despite
our attention and rules. But when they behave and play together well
we feel better. Sometimes they are so sweet; making jokes and helping
out in the clean up after lunch.

S. tiene 10 años y está en tercero de primaria, lo cual significa que
va atrasado con dos años en comparación con otros niños de su edad.
Fue uno de los primeros que vino aquí hace ya unos años y desde un
principio hemos tratado de enseñarle a leer y a escribir y darle un
poco de atención y cariño. Creemos que la situación familiar lo ha
afectado más que a los demás. Cuando hace algo inapropiado tratamos de platicar con él y explicarle que lo que hace no es respetuoso pero la mayoriá de las veces sólo se queda mirando sin asimilar lo que tratamos de decirle, lo cual hace muy difícil el interactuar con él. Últimamente se ha estado portando un poco mejor, sobre todo cuando se siente útil lavando los trastes. En ocasiones incluso retira tu plato de la mesa cuando aun no has terminado: toma su papel muy en serio. Honestamente esperamos que se mantenga calmado y ocupado porque eso le ayuda a concentrarse y también ayuda a que todos estemos calmados.

S. is 10 years old. He is in third grade of primary school, which
means he is two years behind kids of his own age. He has been coming
to the house a long time on his own and we have tried to teach him to
write and read and to give him a lot of love and attention. We think
he has been most affected by his home situation. If he has done
something bad and we try and talk to him about it, he sometimes just
seems to look right through you, not picking up anything you say. This
makes him very hard to handle. However, lately he has been really good
at helping out washing the dishes, sometimes even trying to take away
your plate while you´re still eating, as he wants to wash it really
badly. We hope he is calming down a little bit, because that would
help him to concentrate more and it would help to handle the other
kids better as they all react to his behavior.

Creemos que el recibir a estos niños es una manera importante de vivir
el evangelio. Por el momento cubrimos los gastos de la comida y de la
casa con una donación que recibimos de la comunidad del trabajador
católico en Los Ángeles y con el dinero del trabajo de Manuel. Creemos
que sería más sano si Casa Colibrí no dependiera únicamente de estos

We believe that feeding these poor and hungry kids is an important way
to live the gospel. At the moment we buy food for ourselves and the kids and also pay the bills, from a monthly donation we get from the Los
Angeles Catholic Worker and with the money from Manuel's teaching job.

Nuestra misa mensual | Our monthly mass

El sábado por la tarde celebramos el 3er aniversario de Casa Colibrí en compañía de aproximadamente 20 amigos de Guadalajara y Hosto. Fue una noche muy agradable llena de música, comida y celebración. El padre Rodolfo presidió la misa en la cual nos invito a reflexionar sobre nuestra fe en relación con el mundo en el que vivimos y las situaciones de injusticia que nos exigen responder de manera Cristiana, tales como la Ley de Arizona: señalando a nuestro voluntario Peter de San Francisco California, Rodolfo reafirmó que ¨Nuestro amor no conoce Fronteras¨. También habló sobre el problema de los trabajadores que fueron despedidos por la aerolínea Mexicana y que están en huelga. Nos recordó que nuestra fe debe responder a estas situaciones de una manera tangible y dinámica así como ser receptivos a los problemas que nos rodean en nuestra vida cotidiana.

This last weekend was a big weekend for us. Not only was Saturday the day for our monthly in-house liturgy and dinner, but we had also scheduled our first round table discussion for that Sunday, and the weekend roughly corresponded with the 3rd anniversary of Casa Colibrí! It made for a fun and relaxing weekend of celebration. Saturday night we had about 20 friends from Hosto and Guadalajara join us for mass (which was held inside due to rain) at 7:30. Rodolfo gave a moving homily in which he challenged us to take a look deep look at our own faith and assess how it might shape our thoughts, actions in world view, given the reality of grave injustices like the law in Arizona (he later remarked to Peter ‘Nuestro amor no conoce fronteras’, ‘Our love knows no borders’), or the plight of the airline workers who are currently on strike. He did a beautiful job of emphasizing that our faith must be tangible, dynamic, and receptive to the situation of the world and applied to our everyday life.

La mayoría de las personas se quedaron después de la misa para compartir la cena. Como ya es usual, tuvimos un banquete. Posteriormente Peter nos compartió algunas hermosas canciones en inglés y nuestra cantante de ópera  Conchita, nos deleitó con su contundente vos (cantando una de las preferidas del público: ¨Invítame a pecar¨) Fue una noche de alegría y risas que nos mantuvo despiertos hasta altas horas de le noche.

After mass some people left, but most stuck around for a late dinner. As per usual, the dinner was fantastic, and afterwards Peter shared some songs and our resident opera singer Concha belted out tune after tune (the most memorable of which was ‘Invitame a Pecar’- which means ‘Invite me to sin’ :o), which had us all singing and laughing until the early hours of the morning.

Al día siguiente después del desayuno, tuvimos nuestra primera mesa redonda. En ella compartimos opiniones, puntos de vista y desacuerdos. Sin embargo, todos coincidimos que es necesario el dialogar y educarnos en temas que nos afectan en México, tales como el machismo, el abuso a la mujer, problemas de género, alcoholismo, drogas, discriminación, homosexualidad, conservadurismo, entre otros. Creemos que como seres humanos y cristianos, debemos ser agentes de cambio en cualquier lugar donde nos encontremos, como decía Peter Maurin: ¨Crear un Mundo donde sea más fácil hacer el bien¨.

The next day after breakfast we held our first ‘roundtable discussion’, in which we shared opinions, points of view and disagreements about various social issues that affect us. Despite whatever different viewpoints we may have, we all came together because we are unified in the belief that is necessary to dialogue and educate ourselves on issues that affect us in Mexico. Some issues that we discussed include the prevailing ‘machismo’ conception of masculinity, the abuse of women, gender issues, alcoholism, the trafficking and use of drugs, racial and regional discrimination in Mexico and in the States, homosexuality, and conservatism, to name a few. We believe that as Christians and as human beings we should be agents of change wherever we find ourselves, always keeping in mind Peter Maurin’s vision to ‘create a world where it is easier to do good’.

¡Después de incontables horas de arduo trabajo, hemos terminado los nuevos cuartos! Se ven muy bonitos y ahora podremos brindar este espacio para nuevos voluntarios y huéspedes.

After countless hours of hard work, the upstairs rooms are finished! They look beautiful, if we may say so ourselves, and from the perspective of guests and volunteers, they are certainly preferable to sleeping out back or in the living room!

Ahora que ya terminamos los cuartos hemos estado dedicando más tiempo a nuestra huerta orgánica, que en este momento se parece más a la selva lacandona. Poco a poco estamos arrancando el zacate y la hierba usándolo para la composta. Estamos trabajando muy duro creando camas de siembra y por el momento ya sembramos maíz y frijol. Continuaremos construyendo más camas para sembrar calabacita, tomates y muchos otros vegetales y verduras. En los últimos días Manuel y Pedro han estado un poco mal del estomago por lo que han estado usando te de istafiate de nuestro jardín botánico y hasta el momento se han sentido mucho mejor. Queremos seguir aprendiendo y plantando mas hierbas medicinales en nuestra huerta.

As promised, now that we’ve finished the rooms we’ve begun to work more out back on our small organic ‘farm’ (it more resembles the Amazon rainforest at this point). So far we’ve mowed down part of the jungle and planted some corn, and soon we’ll clear more and build some beds to plant green beans, zucchinis, and various other vegetables and grains. Lately, as both Manuel and Peter have been under the weather, we’ve been going out back and picking herbs for natural, medicinal tea-an area we hope to learn more about and devote more space to!

Manuel participó en un encuentro de sustentabilidad y siembra orgánica en Sayula Jalisco. Durante dos días se llevaron a cabo diferentes talleres: medicina natural, siembra orgánica, compostaje, cerámica, gastronomía local, energía solar, derechos humanos, entre otros. En dicho encuentro participaron personas de diferentes lugares del estado de Jalisco (en su mayoría jóvenes) e incluso tuvimos participantes de Francia y Chile. Fue una experiencia muy enriquecedora.

Manuel participated in a conference on sustainability and organic farming in Sayula, Jaliscio. During those two days there were workshops on natural medicine, organic growing techniques, composting, ceramics, local gastronomy, solar energy, and human rights, among many others. Attendants of the conference included people from different locations within the state of Jalisco (the majority being youth) and included people from as far away as France and Chile. It was truly an enriching experience.

Manuel conoció a una pareja que se mudaron a ¨La Quemada¨, un pueblo muy cercano a Hosto, en donde han conseguido varias hectáreas de tierra y han comenzado a sembrar orgánicamente- Hemos estado reuniéndonos con campesinos de la región tratando de crear una red de apoyo y conciencia para romper con el sistema actual que tanto oprime al campesino. Esto nos emociona mucho ya que es uno de los pilares de los que Peter Maurin siempre hablaba: comunidades agrícolas de mutuo apoyo. Tuvimos nuestra primera reunión con varios campesinos de la región que están interesados en la siembra orgánica y sustentable. Por aproximadamente dos horas compartimos experiencias e ideas con las personas que asistieron a la reunión, así como que es lo que cada uno siembra y los métodos que utilizamos. Al hablar de todos estos problemas nos dimos cuenta que gran parte del problema lo es el actual sistema de producción de alimentos y las compañías que controlan la agricultura y la producción de alimentos: por ejemplo en el pasado casi todas las familias tenían gallinas y producían su propio huevo para el consumo de la casa, en la actualidad la gran mayoría compran el huevo en las tiendas y supermercados. También hablamos de lo importante que es el resistir el sistema capitalista y las corporaciones que cada vez empobrecen más a los campesinos y a la gente que trata de vivir sencillamente y con ¨el sudor de su frente¨. Finalizamos la reunión muy emocionados y planeamos la próxima junta.

Manuel had the fortune of meeting and talking at length with a couple who own a lot of land in the nearby town of La Quemada, who shared the same aspirations of not only growing organically themselves but also supporting and connecting with other farmers in their efforts and coming together to critique the current food system. This excited us greatly because working to build an organic farming movement is an essential part of the ‘farming commune’ of Peter Maurin’s three point program that we are trying to put into practice. Last week we had a roundtable discussion of sorts with the couple as well as other farmers from Hosto and the region who are interested in organic farming, and we talked for over two hours about various topics and issues. We all went around and shared what we were growing, how that was going for us, and gave and received advice and suggestions based on our own collective experience. The conversation then moved from a broader critique of the current food system, and a collective astonishment of how fast it is changing here in Mexico: for instance, many people now buy eggs from the supermarket, which was unheard of only a few years ago.

Our collective concern is that industrialized, convenient food is taking over here in Mexico, which means more profits for corporations, an increased disconnect from one’s food for the consumer, and rampant environmental degradation. Together we intend to resist this dangerous trend. Other topics we touched on were respecting and incorporating indigenous traditions and spirituality into our farming practices, the importance of buying organic to shift the demand, and plans for our next meeting! ¡Estamos de vuelta! Después de 8 meses de ausencia, Casa Colibrí regresa a la ¨blogosfera¨ para mantenerlos informados de lo que hemos hecho y lo que estamos haciendo. Antes que nada mil disculpas por este lapso tan largo. Estamos seguros que a partir de esta ocasión mantendremos el blog actualizado informándoles de lo que acontece en Casa Colibrí y en Hostotipaquillo.

We´re back! After an 8 month hiatus from blogging, Casa Colibrí is back on the blogosphere to update you on what we´ve been doing and what we´re up to.

En breve: Febrero es el mes de las fiestas patronales y es también el tiempo de la música, el baile, los tradicionales castillos, comida, etc. Es muy buen tiempo para visitar.

En Marzo, con la entrada de la primavera, nuestro jardín se lleno de flores, ¨…ni Salomón en toda su gloria se vistió como una de ellas¨.

En Abril tuvimos la visita de dos buenas amigas: Lupita y Lolita y de dos de los sobrinos de Manuel; Osvaldo y Alonso. Fue una semana muy agradable.

En el mes de Mayo lleve a mis estudiantes de Secundaria a una zona arqueológica y a lugares históricos e importantes de Hostotipaquillo.

El grupo de baile de chiquitos hizo su gran presentación en el mes de Junio con vestuarios y bailes nuevos.

Actualmente, tenemos a un voluntario de Los Estados Unidos, Pedro, quien estará aquí por un par de meses. Pedro ha retomado las clases de inglés para adultos y jóvenes. Manuel continúa dando clases de Inglés en la Secundaria local y clases de Baile Folklórico para niños en la Casa de la Cultura de Hostotipaquillo.

We also have a volunteer from the States, Peter, staying with us for a couple months, which means that the high school and adult English classes have started up again. Manuel has also been working hard teaching high school English classes at the local high school and traditional folklorico dance classes at the cultural center, though the high school students have just started summer vacation so now he’ll have more time to spend working on projects here at the house.

En las últimas semanas hemos pasado la mayor parte de nuestro tiempo libre terminado dos cuartos para poder recibir visitantes, huéspedes, amigos, voluntarios y personas interesadas en trabajar en Casa Colibrí. Por el momento hay mucho polvo, escombro y ruido en la casa pero una vez que terminemos valdrá la pena. Esperamos terminar lo más pronto posible para poder pasar más tiempo en otros proyectos. Por el momento sólo hemos sembrado una pequeña área con pepinos pero muy pronto comenzaremos a dedicar más tiempo a sembrar. Continuamos cuidando las gallinas, quienes generosamente nos das huevos a cambio de desperdicios y maíz. Los cascarones de los huevos son excelentes para nutrir a la tierra con calcio: ¡Es un círculo orgánico muy padre!

These days most of our time is spent finishing up building the upstairs rooms so we can house more community members, friends, guests, and volunteers. It´s noisy, dusty work, but it´ll all be worth it soon once the rooms are painted and finished. We’re looking forward to wrapping up the rooms so that we can spend more time in the garden, as teaching and helping out with construction has taken up almost all of our free time in the past few weeks. So far we’ve weeded a bed and planted some cucumbers, but soon we hope to be spending a lot more time planting corn and other delicious vegetables in our dear Mother Earth. In the mean time, we’ve been caring for our hens that live in the back yard, who give us eggs in exchange for our food scraps. We then put the cracked egg shells in the soil of our plants out in the patio which enriches them with precious calcium. It is a beautiful cycle.

El fin de semana pasado tuvimos varios amigos de Guadalajara que vinieron a nuestra misa mensual celebrada por el sacerdote Rodolfo Contreras. Fue una tarde muy placentera y revitalizante. Después de la misa compartimos los alimentos y cantamos hasta medianoche.

Last weekend some friends from Guadalajara came to the house and we held mass out on the patio, led by Rodolfo, an open and inspiring Catholic priest who has travelled and preached far and wide. It was a pleasant, warm evening, and it was very spiritually nourishing to have an intimate mass outside with friends. Afterwards, we ate a delicious meal that everyone helped prepare and talked, laughed, drank coffee and sang songs until late in the evening.

Hemos estado hablando frecuentemente sobre la necesidad de iniciar ¨mesas redondas, que es uno de los pilares muy importantes del movimiento del Trabajador Católico. Ya han surgido varios temas que son de importancia en Hosto, Guadalajara y Jalisco, en general. Uno de los temas que en muy recurrente es el del papel de la Iglesia católica en la vida de la gente del pueblo. Al igual que en muchos países la iglesia católica en México no siempre ha respondido al llamado de Jesús de servir a los pobres y hablar en contra de las injusticias que ocurren en la vida diaria como la opresión a los pobres, la violencia doméstica, los embarazos entre las adolescentes, etc. Sabemos que todos los que formamos parte de la iglesia estamos llamados a actuar de manera humana y responder a las situaciones que nos presenta la vida diaria de una forma cristiana, por ellos estamos muy contentos y ansiosos de comenzar nuestras ¨mesas redondas¨ y poder dialogar y responder de manera concreta a estas situaciones. Ya les informaremos de cómo nos fue.

Something else we have been talking about recently is holding a ‘round table discussion’-one of the pillars of the Catholic Worker movement-with ourselves and some friends from Hosto and Guadalajara about some of the issues that face Hostotipaquillo or Guadalajara and Jalisco in general. One of the ideas we’ve been throwing around is a discussion on the Catholic Church’s role and influence in the area. As those of you familiar with the Catholic Worker probably know, a Catholic Worker community’s relationship to the Church and the hierarchy is often a critical one, one that tries to impel the Church to actively serve the poor, speak out against injustice, and work to build a more just and equitable society. Unfortunately, as with so many parts of the world, the Catholic Church in Hosto has evolved into a bastion for religious conservatism, and has developed a complacency to pressing social issues such as poverty, domestic violence, or teen pregnancies. Furthermore, and perhaps most tragically, the rigid, outdated and conservative outlook of the Church in Hosto has all but stymied any creative, dynamic faith that might challenge and revitalize the Church, especially among the younger generation. Fortunately, there are others who share our same hopes and concerns, and we eagerly await where these conversations will take us. Though our task may seem tall, it is through the fact that there is even interest in having these critical discussions, that there is interest in creating spaces of resistance and social justice for the sake of a dynamic revival of the Catholic Church: it is through these things that our faith is refreshed and restored. We’ll let you know how it goes!

Pasamos tres días de intenso trabajo construyendo un maravilloso empedrado nuevo en la parte del patio de la casa, utilizamos todo el talento y creatividad de Manuel en la construcción.

We spent an intense three days building a beautiful new patio in the back of the house, employing both Manuel's construction skills and creative talent.

Celebramos el Día de Acción de Gracias este año en nuestro clase de Inglés para adultos, dando gracias por la comunidad, amigos, abundante comida y regalos que nosotros recibimos y compartimos con los demás.

We celebrated Thanksgiving this year with our adult English class, giving thanks for community, friends, and the abundance of food and gifts we receive and share with each other.

Desafortunadamente, Margaret regresó a los EEUU en Diciembre, terminando su tiempo como un miembro de la comunidad de la Casa Colibrí. Eso fue extremadamente gratificante para ella por las amistades que hizo y por todas las cosas que ella aprendió en esta experiencia. Antes de irse, tuvimos un fiesta de despedida con la clase de Inglés para niños y otra más en nuestra liturgia mensual. Las celebraciones fueron emocionantes, maravillosas, y un buen final de los 6 meses de bendiciones, retos, oraciones, trabajo, y convivencia.

Sadly, Margaret returned to the U.S. in December, ending her time as a community member at Casa Colibri. She is extremely grateful for the bonds of friendship created and for everything she learned from this experience. Before she left, we had a few going away parties, with the children's English class as well as in conjunction with our monthly liturgy. The celebrations were touching, beautiful and bittersweet endings to 6 months of blessings, challenges, prayer, work, and joy.

Desde que llegué a California hace tres años comencé a sentir más conexión con la cultura Latinoamericana. Tuve la oportunidad de vivir la tradicional celebración del 2 de Noviembre, el día de los muertos. Siempre me impresionó la belleza, el color y el alegre espíritu con el que se celebra esta tradición que honra a los que han muerto. Anteriormente había visto lo mágico de este día: los altares destellantes con velas, flores de cempasúchil, calaveritas de azúcar, calaveras de papel mache, fotografías de familiares y amigos difuntos, el sonido de la música mientras se disfruta el olor y sabor de unos ricos tamales y pozole; los niños corriendo con sus caritas pintadas de calavera. Pero en realidad nunca había tenido la oportunidad de vivir la experiencia desde dentro, todos los preparativos y la organización que implica para crear este ambiente mágico… hasta este año. Lo que más me impresionó es lo mucho que se involucra la comunidad para hacer posible este día.

Por medio de la Secretaria de Cultura, Manuel recibió una cantidad de dinero que fue destinado para impartir talleres artesanales alusivos al día de muertos. Niños, adolescentes, jóvenes y adultos aprendieron a elaborar calaveritas de azúcar y de papel mache, flores de papel, el tradicional papel picado. Nos reunimos semanalmente con un grupo de personas del pueblo en Casa Colibrí para organizar y preparar el festival. La maestra María Cibrian cosió los vestidos y las madres de las niñas los pintaron a mano con diseños que simbolizan tierra, agua y animales, quedaron hermosos. Doña Cuca elaboró 100 faroles para la procesión reciclando botellas de plástico y los niños ayudaron en la decoración de los mismos. Teníamos tanta albahaca en la huerta que con la parte que quedó de las botellas hicimos pequeñas macetas donde la trasplantamos y la regalamos.

Durante la mañana del día del festival, los estudiantes de secundaria de Manuel ayudaron a decorar la plaza con más de mil pliegos de papel picado, la plaza y el altar lucían espectacular. Al ponerse el sol, comenzó la procesión desde el panteón hasta la plaza acompañada de flores y velas, cantando y rezando. Los maestros de ceremonias adecuadamente ataviados de la catrina y el catrín, dirigieron el festival. Ambos lucían como sacados de esas litografías del artista mexicano Guadalupe Posada. El festival en sí, reflejó la diversidad y creatividad de chicos y grandes. El mariachi de la localidad deleitó a la audiencia arrancando suspiros y animando a otros a cantar. Otras señoras que toman clases de baile en la casa de la cultura también se presentaron con una bella estampa de Nuevo León. Algunos estudiantes de secundaria presentaron una divertida obra de teatro alusiva al día de muertos. Otros jóvenes artistas creyeron conveniente hacer homenaje a Michael Jackson cantando y bailando al ritmo de ¨Thriller¨ que fue muy aclamado por el público. Una de las presentaciones más aplaudidas fueron los pequeños bailarines de Manuel quienes al ritmo de Sinaloa arrancaron silbidos, gritos y porras. (Ver video abajo) Indudablemente los más populares de la noche fueron los ¨viejitos¨. Esta tradicional danza del estado de Michoacán en la que los bailarines se visten con mascaras de viejitos y bailan con bastones tal y como si fueran ancianos, arrancó aplausos de toda la multitud que pedían a gritos; otra, otra, otra… y aunque no lo crean ¡Yo fui la viejita! Esto fue verdaderamente una bonita experiencia. Finalmente, Manuel subió al escenario para agradecer la participación de todos y cerrar el evento. Fueron entregados reconocimientos a las personas que de alguna forma u otra hicieron posible el festival. La gente se quedó un buen rato, disfrutando de los antojitos mexicanos, la convivencia, comentando lo bien que se la pasaron y expresando su deseo de volvernos a ver el próximo año… primeramente Dios.

Estoy muy agradecida por la oportunidad que tuve de vivir desde cerca este festival y todo lo que conlleva el hacerlo posible. El haber visto como una comunidad se organiza y trabajan juntos para mantener sus tradiciones y no dejarlas morir a la vez que se renueva la manera en que lo hacen.

Since moving to California three years ago and becoming increasingly connected to Latino culture, I´ve had the chance to experience the traditional celebration on November 2, Day of the Dead. I´ve always been struck by the beauty, color, and vibrant spirit that revolves around a day dedicated to those who have died. In the past I´ve experienced the magic of the day: altars brimming with candles, marigolds, sugar skulls, decorated skeletons, and pictures of loved ones who have passed; listening to live music while inhaling the smells of tamales and posole; the energy of kids running around with faces painted as skulls. But I never had the chance to experience all the preparation and planning that goes into creating all that magic…until this year. And what struck me the most was just how much community involvement was spurred in order to make this day possible.

Manuel received a grant which allowed him to hold several workshops on how to make all the traditional crafts associated with Day of the Dead. Folks from town made sugar skulls, paper mache skeletons, paper flowers, and papel picado (beautifully designed ¨cut paper¨). We held weekly meetings in the house to prepare the logistics of stage and sound for the music and dancing that would be performed in the main plaza. A friend made the dresses for Manuel´s folklorico dancers and the dancers´ mothers got together to hand paint each dress, using the stencils Manuel designed and cut symbolizing earth, water, and animal life. Another friend cut 100 Coke bottles in half and used papel picado to decorate the top halves to be used as candle holders. (We later used the bottom halves as temporary planters when giving away the basil plants that were taking over the garden.)

The morning of the festival, some local students helped decorate the plaza with over a thousand sheets of papel picado and decorated the plaza´s main altar using the crafts made during the workshops. In the afternoon, we processed from the cemetery to the plaza holding candles, singing and praying along the way. The night festivities were hosted by our masters of ceremonies, the skeleton couple, El Catrín y La Catrina, La Catrina´s outfit being topped off with a splendidly decorated hat modeled from the original metalwork design by Guadalupe Posada. The performances reflected the diversity and creativity of the community: a local mariachi band performed while the crowd sang along to every song, some women from a dance class at the local community center performed with their teacher, some young people put on an original play, and other young people thought it was an appropriate year to perform an homage to Michael Jackson´s ¨Thriller.¨ It turned out to be one of everybody´s favorites. Hands down the highlight of the night was Manuel´s folklorico dancers, prompting whistles and cheers from the crowd. (See video below!) Following the children´s dances was a traditional dance called Danza de Los Viejitos, in which several men wore masks and the traditional clothes of old men, and yours truly was the old woman! We had to act like shaky old folks, hobbling around on canes in the midst of a choreographed dance…what an experience! Finally, Manuel appeared on stage to give final remarks and thank yous, awards were given to the performers, and the crowd continued to talk, eat, and mingle amongst the altars.

I´m extremely grateful for the chance to have experienced so much of what made up this day, to have witnessed so much community created; seeing cultural traditions passed on and made new.

We (Manuel, Margaret, and houseguest Martin...you can only live at Casa Colibrí if your name starts with M) wanted to share a few recent activies.

En el mes de Julio participamos en unos talleres de ecología para niños, en los cuales se les enseño a los pequeños que tipo de plantas, animales y rocas existen en el municipio al igual que otros recursos naturales. Don Braulio, un campesino de Hosto, dió una platica que fue de gran utilidad para todos. Manuel dió una pequeña charla donde se resaltó la importancia de cuidar el medio ambiente, el reciclado y no tirar basura.

In July, we participated in an ecological workshop for kids, exploring which plants, animals, rocks, and other natural resources can be found in our local area. One of the farmers, Don Braulio, gave a talk on Hostotipaquillo, and Manuel gave a lecture on littering, recycling, and being responsible with our trash when he saw one of the kids throw trash out the window.

Un amigo Armando nos llevó a una cascada. De regreso, fue necesario subir por la pared del despeñadero que es muy enpinada. El nos sugirió que subieramos esa parte ¨con mucho valor.¨

Our friend Armando took us on a hike to a waterfall. On the way back, we hiked STRAIGHT UP the side of the fall. He advised to climb that part ¨with a lot of courage.¨

En Agosto tuvimos la oportunidad de ver la romería anual de Nuestra Señora del Favor, la patrona de Hostotipaquillo. La procesión pasó por nuestra casa y las fotos son desde el techo.

In August we got to view the annual procession of Nuestra Señora del Favor, the statue of the patroness of Hostotipaquillo. The procession went right past our house and the pictures are the view from the roof.

Un amigo Toño tiene una destileria de tequila orgánica y nos dió un tour. El tequila es hecho con el jugo de la fruta que parece una gran piña (una foto abajo) del agave (foto arriba). Él esta mostrandonos la fruta dulce, otro producto del agave. Como el tequila se produce de una planta dulce, según los expertos, es mejor tomarlo con comida dulce en vez de sal y limon. Él sugiere pedazos de naranja con canela molida como alternativa. Volviendo a la casa por La Ruta del Tequila, donde hay mucho agave sembrado, vimos una camión transportando la fruta que es la materia prima para hacer la bebida tradicional tan importante en este area y cultura.

Our friend Toño runs a small organic tequila dystilery in the nearby town of Tequila and gave us a tour. Tequila is produced from the juice of the pineapple-like fruit (pictured below) of the blue agave cactus (agave field pictured above). He´s pictured displaying the sweet fruit candy, another product of the agave. According to the expert, since agave is a sweet fruit, tequila should be taken with sweet things instead of the traditional salt and lime. He offers powdered cinnamon on orange slices as an alternative. On our way home, driving along Ruta del Tequila, where there are agave fields as far as you can see, we saw a truck transporting the raw goods to be produced into the traditional drink so important to this place and culture.

¡Finalmente, acabamos de celebrar el segundo aniversario de Casa Colibrí con una misa y una fiesta! Fue una noche muy especial, con una homilía maravillosa con el Padre Rodolfo,mucha comida rica con buenos amigos, y para terminar, nuestra amiga Conchita nos deleitó con su voz increíble. ¡Estilo Chavela Vargas!

Finally, we recently celebrated the second anniversary of Casa Colibrí with a mass followed by a great party! Highlights were a wonderful homily by Father Rodolfo, good food and fellowship with friends, and last but not least, we were graced by our friend Conchita´s rousing voice and incredible singing. Eat your heart out Aretha!

EL PRINCIPIO THE BEGINNING

El Trabajador Católico de Hostotipaquillo inició con la inquietud de responder a las necesidades de la vida rural en México y vivir en solidaridad con esta realidad. Inspirados en crear un mundo mejor, buscamos formar comunidad y construir el reino de Dios a través de los envangelios.

Aceptamos el llamado de Dios a trabajar por la paz en un mundo lleno de violencia, a servir a nuestro prójimo en un mundo de egoísmo, a vivir una vida sencilla en un mundo materialista. Reconocemos que el Creador nos ha encomendado su creación y es nuestra responsabilidad cuidarla por medio del respeto, reverencia, y amor para toda persona, cultura, y creación. Consideramos importante cultivar y cuidar la tierra, desde una perspectiva ecológica, ya que es un regalo de Dios que nos sustenta y sostiene.

The Hostotipaquillo Catholic Worker began with the desire to respond to the needs of rural life in Mexico and to live in solidarity with this reality. Inspired to create a better world, we seek to form community and build the kingdom of God as written in the gospels.

We accept God´s call to work for peace in a world filled with violence, to serve our neighbor in a world of rugged individualism, to live simply in a world of materialism. We recognize that the Creator has entrusted us with this world, and it´s our responsibility to care for it with respect, reverence, and love for all people, cultures, and all of creation. To that end, we place importance on making decisions with an environmental focus, and cultivating and caring for the land, as it is God´s gift that feeds and sustains us.

NUESTRA HISTORIA

OUR HISTORY

El Trabajador Católico fue fundado en 1933 en Nueva York por Peter Maurin y Dorothy Day como un movimiento laico. Los fundadores vivieron y trabajaron basados en la caridad que Jesucristo nos pide en el evangelio:
“Tuve hambre y ustedes me dieron de comer; tuve sed y ustedes me dieron de beber. Fui forastero y ustedes me recibieron en su casa. Anduve sin ropas y me vistieron. Estuve enfermo y fueron a visitarme. Estuve en la cárcel y me fueron a ver.ˮ (Mt 25 : 35-36) El Trabajador Católico anhela una comunidad sin violencia que no dependa de las instituciones para responder a las necesidades de los pobres y marginados. De ahí parte la necesidad de regresar a las “raicesˮ de una vida sencilla donde se resalten los valores comunitarios que aun se encuentran en la vida del campo y han sido tan rechazados por nuestra sociedad moderna.

Aunque la mayoría de las comunidades del Trabajador Católico han surgido en las ciudades, existen también algunas comunidades que se han enfocado en vivir los valores del Movimiento en un ambiente rural. De esta manera se busca propiciar un intercambio entre la realidad campesina y urbana. Decía Peter Maurin, “Necesitamos comunidades agricolas para transformar a los académicos en trabajadores y a los trabajadores en académicos.ˮ

The Catholic Worker was founded in 1933 in New York as a lay movement by Peter Maurin and Dorothy Day. Their life and work was based on Jesus’ teaching in the Gospel, “I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you cared for me. I was in prison and you visited me.” (Matt 25: 35-36) This work is realized today in a variety of ways, including houses of hospitality, soup kitchens, food and clothing distribution, and free clinics. The Catholic Worker aspires to be a community of nonviolence, remaining independent of institutions, in its efforts to respond to the needs of the poor and marginalized. This the founders called Christian personalism. To this end, we see the need to return to the “roots” of a simple life, adopting community values that are found in rural life and that have been so rejected by our modern society.

Although the majority of Catholic Worker communities have been established in cities, there also exists a tradition of farming communities, helping to create a bridge within the movement between the realities of rural and urban life. As Peter Maurin said, “we need farming communities in order to transform the scholars into workers and the workers into scholars.”

Casa Colibrí se fundó en Hostotipaquillo el 25 de Agosto del 2007 por Manuel Hernandez y Jorge Manly. Forma parte de una red de casas hermanas de la comunidad del Trabajador Católico de Los Angeles, CA. Desde el principio, nuestro trabajo ha encarnado la filosofía del Trabajador Católico de ¨construir una nueva sociedad dentro del caparazón de la sociedad antigua.¨ Construimos la casa con nuestras propias manos, usando las ruinas de una casa de adobe de más de 200 años de antiguedad.

El vivir en una area rural, en un país empobrecido nos da oportunidad de ver lo que nos rodea con otros ojos. Los recursos, materiales, ropa, utensilios, y otros objetos se ven con valor y no como basura. Por ello creemos y valoramos el uso y reuso de las cosas y reciclamos todo lo que nos sea posible. Vemos un gran contraste con el estilo de vida de los paises ricos donde se desperdicia tanto. Creemos que no es sólo cuestion económica y ecologica, sino que nos da un sentido de independencía encontra del consumerismo y las grandes corporaciones.

El vivir y trabajar en una zona campesina también le da un significado especial a la frase: ¨Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día¨ Durante la semana deshierbamos la hortaliza, preparamos la tierra, recogemos los huevos y cosechamos los vegetales que usamos para las comidas de cada día. Después de la comida damos la bienvenida a niños y adultos en nuestra casa para impartir clases de inglés. También participamos en la Casa de la Cultura con clases de Baile Folklórico y arte.

Estamos conscientes de lo necesario que es construir comunidad, por ello, oramos juntos, tenemos mesas redondas, liturgias y la celebración de la Misa. De esta manera buscamos compartir las alegrías y tristezas y a su vez renovar nuestro compromiso de acrecentar la fe en el caminar diario.

Aunque lo que Casa Colibrí puede ser en un futuro nos rebasa, creemos que la manera en la que una comunidad crece es de forma natural y orgánica. Vemos la necesidad de integrarnos y crear lazos con la gente que nos rodea y aprender de las experiencias y sabiduría de la gente aquí en Hosto. Sabemos que esto se dará de forma natural y sin forzar las cosas, entendiendo que la verdadera transformación se crea poco a poco y únicamente con la bendición de la gracia de Dios. Dorothy Day dijo: ¨No estamos llamados a ser exitosos sino a actuar con fe¨.

Además de nuestro deseo de integrarnos más con la gente del pueblo aquí en Hosto, nuestra visión también incluye el construir el segundo piso para poder recibir a voluntarios y huéspedes. Poco a poco esperamos desarrollar más la hortaliza buscando ser más autosuficientes desde una perspectiva orgánica, incluyendo actividades como: elaboración de composta, abonos orgánicos, conservas de frutas y vegetales, un pequeño vivero para compartir con la gente, expandir el gallinero para la producción de huevo. En un futuro criar chivas y ¡tal vez una vaca!

Nuestro propósito a largo plazo es el poder realizar algunas de estas actividades con gente y campesinos del pueblo para crear cooperativas. También soñamos con crear un taller de cerámica usando recursos y arcilla local, para lo cual se necesita construir un horno de altas temperaturas.

Por supuesto que no podremos hacer todo esto solos, dependemos de las oraciones y el apoyo moral de familiares y amigos. Casa Colibrí was founded in Hostotipaquillo by Manuel Hernandez and Jorge Manly on August 25, 2007 as part of a network of sister houses of the Los Angeles Catholic Worker. We consider our highest priority to live a simple life in light of the gospels. To this end, we see the need to work with our hands, learn new skills, and apply them to daily life.

From the beginning, our work has brought to life the Catholic Worker philosophy of “building a new society in the shell of the old.” We built this very house with our own hands using the foundation and skeletal structure of a 200 year old casa de adobe. Living in a rural area, in an impoverished country, lends to an enlightened culture of regarding our surroundings with value rather than as waste or junk. Appliances, materials, clothes, and other objects get fixed and reused, in sharp contrast to the U.S. culture of the perceived need to throw out the old and buy new. The effects are not only economic and environmental, they also produce a sense of empowerment and independence from corporations.

Working and living on a farm also lends new meaning to the words, “give us this day our daily bread.” In a typical day, we will weed the garden, gather the eggs and harvest the vegetables that we will use in our meals that day. After lunch, we welcome children and adults into the house for English classes, as well as lead dance classes and art workshops at the local community center. Aware that community is what sustains us, we come together regularly for prayer, round table discussions, and liturgy, in order to share our joys and sorrows, and renew our commitment to our faith journey.

While the vision of what Casa Colibrí could be in the future far exceeds the current reality, we believe that the proper way for a community to grow is naturally and organically. We see a more integrated relationship with the larger community and increased friendship, participation, and wisdom from the people of “Hosto.” But it is not our duty to force this dynamic and we understand that true transformation and community is built slowly and only with the blessings of grace. As Dorothy Day said, “we are called not to be successful, but to be faithful.” In addition to integrating more into the larger community, our visions include: building a second floor to the house to welcome more guests and volunteers; expanding the farm, compost pile, and beginning a canning and preserving project; creating a community nursery for folks who would like to start their own backyard farms; and acquiring more chickens and possibly a few goats or

even a cow! Long-term goals include expanding the canning project into a cottage

industry/cooperative, and acquiring a kiln to teach classes in ceramics and eventually create a ceramics cottage industry/cooperative.
